Lengthening operations in Türkiye

What is limb lengthening surgery and how much growth can I expect?

Limb lengthening surgery, also known as height surgery, is a surgical procedure that allows individuals to increase their height by utilizing the body’s natural ability to regenerate new bone. The surgery involves cutting the bone, specifically the femur or tibia, that needs to be lengthened and using various fixation devices or frames to ensure stability during the recovery process. With a leg lengthening surgery and 2.5 to 3 months of treatment, patients can expect to gain an average of 6 cm in the tibia or 8 cm in the femur. However, the final results may depend on the individual’s muscle and soft tissue flexibility. We prioritize postoperative care and physiotherapy to ensure optimal outcomes for all our patients.

How long is the recovery period after limb-lengthening surgery?

The recovery period after leg lengthening surgery is divided into three phases. The initial phase, which includes surgery and hospitalization, usually lasts between 5-7 days. Following this, patients will progress to the distraction phase, which can take anywhere from 2-3 months, where the bone is gradually pulled apart to stimulate new bone formation. The third and final phase is the bone consolidation and full recovery phase, which can take up to 9-12 months. During this time, the newly formed bone will solidify and become fully functional, allowing patients to resume most physical activities effectively. In general, patients can expect to start walking normally around 4-5 months post-surgery. However, It’s crucial to follow the doctor’s instructions, attend physical therapy, and exercise regularly to ensure timely recovery.

What are the different leg lengthening methods available?

When it comes to leg lengthening surgery, there are a few commonly used methods. The most advanced and effective options are internal methods such as Precice 2.2, which uses an internal nail for precise control of the lengthening rate. However, these internal methods can also be the most expensive. The LON method is another advanced option, using both an internal nail and an external fixator, and is considered a safe and affordable option. Other less preferred methods include the Ilizarov and Holyfix methods, which are external and require a longer post-operative recovery period.  Contact us to learn more about the limb lengthening surgery methods and to determine the most suitable one for you.
